My celebrant services are offered free of charge for funerals of children 16 years of age or under
There should be no comparison of who has the worst pain, whether they are the parents of a child not yet born, a young child that has died, or the parents of an adult child.
All have suffered the greatest loss of their lives
A death at any age can be difficult for the bereaved to handle but the emotional trauma caused
by the death of a baby, infant or child is one of the hardest things anyone ever has to cope with.
It’s outside the natural order for a child to die before his or her parents and the crushing grief
you experience can be devastating. Whether they die suddenly as the result of a tragic event or
whether they’ve been ill for a long time, nothing can truly prepare you for the overwhelming
shock and sadness that will follow.
There is no minimum age a child must reach before it’s acceptable to grieve their death.
People sometimes assume that the heartache caused by miscarriage is less than for losing an
older child but, as a famous quote says, “once you become real, you can’t become unreal again”.
The death of a foetus is the death of a longed-for child if you are his or her grieving parent.
You begin to form a relationship with your baby long before he or she is born so the depth of
loss can be just as strong when babies die before or at birth as it is for a much older child.
If you are faced with the daunting task of planning a baby or child’s funeral, it will be the last
physical act of caring you can perform for them so I understand how important it is for you to
honour their life in a way that is meaningful to you.
